The Instagram engagement rate formula
- By followers: (likes + comments + shares + saves per post) ÷ followers × 100.
- By views or reach: the same interactions ÷ average views or reach × 100. It is fairer for Reels that reach many non-followers.
Example: 450 likes and 25 comments on an account with 12,000 followers give (450 + 25) ÷ 12,000 = 3.96% by followers.
Where to find the numbers
- Likes and comments are visible on every post unless the owner hides like counts.
- Shares, saves and reach are in the post insights of professional (creator or business) accounts.
- Use 10 to 20 regular posts and skip a single viral one; it distorts the average.
Checking an account before you buy or advertise
- Very high followers with very few likes and comments usually means inactive or bought followers.
- Compare with accounts of a similar size in the same niche, not with an industry average.
- Check the account's age under About this account; aged accounts are listed on aged Instagram accounts.
