Karma is Reddit's rough measure of how the community has reacted to your posts and comments. Reddit itself does not set one karma number for posting; each subreddit's moderators decide what they require.
1. What karma is
- Karma reflects upvotes and downvotes on what you post and comment.
- It is not one-to-one: one upvote does not always add exactly one karma point. Reddit describes karma as an approximation.
- It shows on your profile, and moderators can use it to filter who may post in their community.
2. The four types of karma
| Type | Comes from |
|---|---|
| Post karma | Votes on your posts |
| Comment karma | Votes on your comments |
| Awarder karma | Giving awards |
| Awardee karma | Receiving awards |
When a subreddit sets a minimum it may count post karma, comment karma or the total. The rule tells you which.
3. Why your post was removed
- Karma minimum: the community requires more karma than the account has.
- Account age minimum: the account is younger than the community allows, often counted in days.
- Email not verified: some communities filter unverified accounts.
- Spam filter: links to the same website again and again, or posting the same text in many communities.
Most of these removals are done automatically by AutoModerator and many communities do not publish their exact numbers, to make life harder for spammers.
4. How to find a community's requirements
- Read the rules in the sidebar on desktop, or under the community info on mobile.
- Check pinned posts at the top of the community.
- Read the removal message if AutoModerator sent one.
- Still unsure? Send a short, polite message to the moderators through Message the mods.
5. How to build karma the right way
- Start with helpful comments in active threads of communities you know: early, useful answers collect the most votes.
- Use communities that welcome new users and have low or no minimums.
- Post original content that fits each community's rules, and avoid dropping links in your first weeks.
- Be patient: an account that is active for weeks with steady karma is treated very differently from one that appeared yesterday.
6. Why account age matters
Account age is one of the simplest signals moderators and Reddit's filters use to separate real users from throwaway and spam accounts. Age cannot be sped up: it only grows with time. That is why people who need to post in strict communities sometimes look for aged Reddit accounts with existing karma, and check the account's history before buying.
7. What to avoid
- Vote manipulation: asking for upvotes, voting rings or bought votes break Reddit's rules and can get accounts suspended.
- Karma farming with reposted content: communities ban it and it rarely lasts.
- Evading a ban with a new account: Reddit treats this as a serious violation.
Frequently asked questions
How much karma do you need to post on Reddit?
Reddit has no single site-wide number. Each subreddit's moderators set their own minimum karma and account age, and many do not publish the exact figures.
Why does my Reddit post get removed instantly?
Usually AutoModerator removed it because the account is below the community's karma or age minimum, the email is not verified, or the post tripped a spam filter.
What are the types of Reddit karma?
Post karma, comment karma, awarder karma and awardee karma.
Does one upvote equal one karma point?
Not exactly. Reddit describes karma as an approximate reflection of votes, not a one-to-one count.
How can I make my Reddit account older?
You cannot speed up account age; it only grows with time. Communities with age limits will accept the account once it reaches their minimum.
