Telegram's FAQ says that an account which does not come online for at least 18 months is deleted together with its messages, media and contacts, and that the owner can change this period in Settings. Many accounts were set to a shorter period earlier, so check yours.
How the self-destruct timer works
- The timer counts from the last time the account was online on any device.
- When the period passes without activity, Telegram deletes the account, its messages, media and contacts. Groups and channels it created stay, but they lose this account as a member or admin.
- Opening Telegram on any logged-in device resets the count.

Check and change the timer
- Open Settings → Privacy and Security.
- Find Delete my account / If away for (the label depends on the app).
- Choose the longest period your app offers.
Do this on the first day you receive an account, together with the steps in the post-delivery checklist.
What is lost when an account is deleted
- The account itself and its creation date: a new sign-up with the same number starts as a new account.
- Its messages and contacts.
- Its admin rights. If it was the only owner of a channel or group, nobody can take over ownership afterwards, so add a second trusted admin and see ownership transfer.
Keeping aged accounts alive
- Set the longest timer and log in at least once well within it; a monthly reminder is simple.
- Keep the phone number active, so you can still receive a login code. See login code not received.
- Turn on two-step verification and a recovery email.
- For many accounts, keep a list with the last login date of each one.
Frequently asked questions
How long until Telegram deletes an inactive account?
The Telegram FAQ gives 18 months without coming online, but the owner can set a different, often shorter, period in Privacy and Security settings, so check the current value.
Can a deleted Telegram account be restored?
No. Signing up again with the same number creates a new account with a new creation date.
Does reading messages count as activity?
Coming online on any logged-in device resets the timer.
What happens to my channel if my account is deleted?
The channel stays, but it loses this account. If it was the only owner, ownership cannot be transferred later, so add another trusted admin in time.
Where is the self-destruct setting?
Settings → Privacy and Security, under Delete my account or If away for, depending on the app.
