Telegram blue checkmark: how to get it and spot fakes.

Only Telegram can give the official checkmark, and only to large, active official channels, groups and bots. Everything else that looks like a badge deserves a second look.

Telegram's verification page states the rules plainly: the checkmark identifies official sources, it gives no extra features, and only Telegram can assign it. Knowing those rules makes most fake-badge tricks easy to spot.

Who can get the official checkmark

  • Channels, groups and bots of public figures and organizations. Telegram says it does not verify user accounts at the moment.
  • Usually only large, active official chats that have notable verified accounts on at least two of: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter (X), VK, Snapchat.
  • Applicants are also asked for at least two press articles that mention them. An undisputed Wikipedia page that links to the chat can count for one missing account or article; for organizations, a link from the official website may also be considered.

How to apply

  1. Add a link to your Telegram channel, group or bot in the bio of your verified accounts on the platforms above.
  2. Prepare links to press articles about you or your organization.
  3. Contact the official @VerifyBot and follow its steps.

Verification does not unlock any features. Telegram itself notes that a link to your channel from your official website or other official accounts can achieve a similar result. A verified chat also can't change its name or t.me link; you would have to remove verification with /unverify in @VerifyBot first.

Third-party verification icons

Official third-party services with a Telegram-verified bot can add their own icons to accounts and chats. These icons appear before the name, use the verifier's own design, and the profile explains who verified it. Only Telegram assigns the official checkmark; third-party verifiers use completely different icons.

How to spot a fake badge

  • Open the profile. The official checkmark and third-party icons come with information on the profile; a checkmark typed into the name or bio does not.
  • Look at the position. Third-party icons sit before the name. An emoji placed at the end of a name or an emoji status can imitate a badge.
  • Check the username. Impersonators use look-alike usernames with extra letters, underscores or numbers.
  • Distrust urgency. Messages from "Telegram support" asking for login codes, passwords or payments are scams; Telegram does not ask for your login code.

Thinking of buying a "verified" channel?

Verification belongs to an official person or organization, not to whoever owns the channel. A verified chat can't change its name or link without losing verification, so a "verified channel for sale" either keeps someone else's identity or loses the badge. Treat such offers as a red flag. If you need a channel with history, buy an old Telegram channel and build your own trust signals; see how to make a channel look established.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a blue checkmark on Telegram?

Official channels, groups and bots of public figures or organizations can apply through @VerifyBot. Telegram usually requires verified accounts on at least two major platforms linking to the chat and at least two press articles.

Can a personal Telegram account be verified?

Telegram says it does not verify user accounts at the moment. Third-party verifiers can add their own icons to accounts, which are different from the official checkmark.

Does verification give extra features?

No. It only shows that the channel, group or bot is official.

Can I buy a verified Telegram channel?

Be cautious. Verification identifies an official source, and a verified chat cannot change its name or link without removing verification, so the badge does not transfer to a new identity.

How do I tell a real checkmark from a fake one?

Open the profile: official and third-party verification show information there. A checkmark emoji in the name or bio, or an emoji status, is not verification.
