Whoever controls the owner account controls the channel. Thieves rarely break Telegram itself; they trick the owner or an admin into handing over access. The good news is that a few settings make that very hard.
How channels and groups get stolen
- Phishing: a fake "Telegram support" message, a fake verification bot or a look-alike login page asks for your login code or password.
- Fake buyers or partners: someone "interested in buying" or "running an ad" asks for a login code, or asks you to log in somewhere to "verify" the channel.
- Session-stealing malware: a file sent as a "price list", "media kit" or "screenshot" installs software that copies the logged-in Telegram session from your computer.
- Weak admin accounts: an admin with wide rights gets hacked, and the thief uses those rights.
- Lost phone or email: someone gets the device or the email that receives your codes.
Why two-step verification protects the owner role
Transferring ownership of a channel or group requires the owner's two-step verification password, and Telegram requires the owner's session to be older than 24 hours. So a thief who just got into the account cannot simply move the channel to themselves, and without your password they cannot do it at all. That makes a strong, unique two-step verification password the single most important protection. Set it up with our two-step verification guide.
Protection checklist
- Turn on two-step verification with a strong password used nowhere else, and add a recovery email you control.
- Check Settings → Devices regularly and terminate any session you do not recognise.
- Never share a login code with anyone, including people who say they are Telegram, a buyer or an advertiser. Telegram does not ask for it.
- Do not open files from strangers on the computer where Telegram is logged in, especially archives and executables.
- Give admins only the rights they need, and keep Add new admins for people you fully trust. Plan it with the admin permission planner.
- Ask every admin to turn on two-step verification too.
- Remove admins and bots you no longer use.
If your account or channel was taken
- If you are still logged in anywhere: open Settings → Devices and choose Terminate all other sessions, then change your two-step verification password and recovery email.
- Check the channel: who is the owner, who are the admins, and were new admins or bots added? Remove anything you do not recognise.
- Warn your audience from a backup channel or your website so subscribers ignore scam posts.
- If you cannot log in: contact Telegram through the official support form, ideally from a device you used before, with your phone number and a clear description.
- Beware of "recovery" services that ask for money or your codes; they are usually a second scam.
Buying and selling safely
A real channel deal never needs a login code: ownership moves with Telegram's built-in owner transfer. Follow the handover checklist, read the scam red flags, and check that you are talking to the real seller. SocialStore's only account is @SocialStore_pro, and our old Telegram channels are delivered by full ownership transfer.
Frequently asked questions
How do people steal Telegram channels?
Usually by taking over the owner's or an admin's account: phishing for login codes, fake buyers asking for codes, malware that copies the logged-in session, or hacked admin accounts with wide rights.
Can someone transfer my channel without my password?
Ownership transfer requires the owner's two-step verification password and a session older than 24 hours, so a strong two-step verification password blocks it.
What should I do first if my channel was stolen?
From any device where you are still logged in, terminate all other sessions in Settings → Devices, change your two-step verification password and check the channel's owner and admins.
How do I contact Telegram if I can't log in?
Use the official support form at telegram.org/support, preferably from a device you used before, with your phone number and a description.
Will a buyer ever need my login code?
No. A genuine channel sale uses Telegram's built-in ownership transfer. Anyone asking for a login code is trying to take the account.
