Telegram's FAQ describes the counter in two sentences that matter a lot: views from forwarded copies are included, and the numbers are approximate because Telegram forgets that you saw a post after about 4 days and counts you again if you open it later.
How the view counter works
- Every post has a counter (the eye icon).
- Forwards are included: views of forwarded copies in other chats add to the original post's total.
- Repeat views: after a short while (around 4 days) the same person can be counted again if they open the post.
- Approximate: Telegram itself calls the numbers approximate.

What views don't tell you
- Unique readers: views are not the number of different people.
- Subscribers' attention: a post that was forwarded widely can have many views from people who never joined.
- Quality: views can be bought just like members. A view count alone cannot prove an audience is real.
Reading views correctly
- Use typical posts. Take the median of the last 10–20 regular posts; ignore pinned, viral and very new ones.
- Compare with subscribers. Views far below similar channels can mean inactive subscribers; views far above on ordinary posts need an explanation.
- Look at the shape. Real views grow quickly in the first hours and then flatten; identical counts on every post are a warning sign.

Channel statistics
Telegram's developer documentation says detailed statistics are available to admins of channels and supergroups above a certain size, set by Telegram's servers (API stats). When the Statistics screen is available, it shows growth, sources of new subscribers and views over time, which are stronger evidence than screenshots of single posts.
