Short answer: Telegram shares 50% of the revenue it earns from sponsored messages with the owners of the channels where those ads are shown. Ads run in public channels with 1,000+ subscribers, earnings build up as a balance inside the channel, and the owner withdraws through Fragment. Here is how each step works, based on Telegram's own pages and creator terms.

1. What Telegram ad revenue sharing is

Telegram launched Sponsored Messages in 2021: short ads of up to 160 characters that advertisers buy on the Telegram Ad Platform and that appear in public channels. On 31 March 2024 Telegram opened revenue sharing to channel owners. Its announcement said owners of public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers can receive 50% of the revenue from ads displayed in their channels.

  • The share: 50% of the revenue Telegram earns from valid impressions of sponsored messages in your channel.
  • Who pays: advertisers pay Telegram on the Ad Platform in Gram, the coin called Toncoin (TON) until June 2026.
  • Where the money goes: your share builds up as a balance in the channel, which you withdraw through Fragment.

The rules are set out in Telegram's Content Creator Rewards terms. They describe the share as a voluntary incentive that Telegram can change or stop at any time, so treat it as a bonus on top of a channel's other income, not a guaranteed salary.

2. Which channels are eligible

ConditionWhat Telegram says
Channel typePublic one-to-many channels. The launch post described the share for public channels, so private channels are not covered.
SizeThe Ad Platform creates sponsored messages for public channels with 1000+ subscribers, and the 2024 launch post set the same 1,000 subscriber line for revenue sharing.
RegionThe rewards program may be partly or fully unavailable for some channels, owners and regions, depending on demand, regulation, channel topic and other factors.
ContentThe channel has to follow Telegram's terms. Rule breaks can lead to withheld rewards, removal from the program, or loss of the channel.

Eligibility only means ads can run in the channel. Advertisers choose the channels or audiences for their ads, so an eligible channel may still see few or no ads. If that is your situation, our guide on why a channel earns no ad revenue walks through the checks.

3. How earnings are counted

Revenue is tied to valid impressions of sponsored messages, not to the number of subscribers. In practice that means:

  • A sponsored message is shown to readers who open the channel, so channels whose readers actually view posts produce more impressions.
  • Readers in regions where ads are not available do not produce ad impressions, even if they are subscribed.
  • Telegram's Premium FAQ says sponsored messages are hidden for Premium subscribers, so they do not add ad impressions.
  • Telegram decides what counts as a valid impression and can deduct anything it treats as invalid activity.

Telegram does not publish rates per impression, and the amount depends on what advertisers pay for channels like yours. To get a rough idea for a channel, plug its real views into our Telegram ad revenue calculator, which shows the owner's 50% share in Gram and USD.

4. Gram and Stars balances

The creator terms describe two balances a channel can build up:

Gram balanceStar balance
Where it comes fromAd revenue share (the 2024 launch post described ads paid in Toncoin, now Gram)Stars earned from paid posts, Star reactions and other Stars features
Available to withdraw2 days after it was accrued21 days after it was accrued
Other usesReinvest in Telegram ads for your channel; the launch post also named collectible usernames and Premium giveawaysPlace Telegram ads for that channel, where each Star counts as 0.02 USD of ad credit

The balance shown in the app is an estimate. Telegram's terms say it is not money held in deposit for you until it has been withdrawn, and any USD or EUR value the app shows is only an approximation, because the price of Gram moves. For the Stars side, see our Telegram Stars withdrawal guide.

5. How to withdraw ad earnings

Telegram processes all creator rewards through Fragment, a non-custodial platform, so you need your own crypto wallet that works with Gram.

  1. Set up a wallet such as Tonkeeper or MyTonWallet and write the recovery words down offline.
  2. Open the channel's earnings as the channel owner: Telegram's launch post points to Channel Settings > Statistics > Monetization. Check the balance that is available, not just accrued.
  3. Start the withdrawal and follow the link to Fragment. Connect your wallet there with Connect TON.
  4. Confirm the withdrawal. Telegram said owners can withdraw with no fees; blockchain network fees can still apply in your wallet.
Withdrawals are for the channel owner. Telegram's terms make the owner responsible for the balance, including keeping the account safe with two-step verification and official apps only. Nobody from Telegram or Fragment will ask you for your recovery words or login code. A message offering to "speed up" or "unlock" your ad payout is a scam.

Fragment may not be able to pay out to some users or countries. If you cannot use Fragment, Telegram's terms say it is not obliged to offer another payout method.

6. What can reduce or cancel your earnings

Telegram's terms let it deduct Grams or Stars it links to invalid activity, up to the full balance, and even to offset future rewards if problems are found after a withdrawal. Invalid activity includes:

  • asking or paying people to view or click sponsored messages to inflate the payout;
  • bots, automation, fake impressions, spam or any other non-genuine activity, whether you run it or a third party does;
  • breaking Telegram's terms, which can also end your participation in the program or cost you the channel.

This is why buying cheap subscribers or views does not help: fake readers do not produce valid impressions and can put the whole balance at risk. Real readers, regular posting and a topic advertisers want are what move ad revenue. Our views explained guide shows how to read your channel's numbers.

7. How channel age and size relate to ad revenue

Telegram's published conditions for revenue sharing are about the channel being public, its subscriber count and following the rules. None of Telegram's pages we checked list a minimum channel age. So:

  • Age does not unlock ads. A channel created last week with 1,000 subscribers meets the published size line; a ten-year-old channel with 300 subscribers does not.
  • Size alone does not pay. The share is tied to valid impressions, so an aged channel with an inactive audience can earn very little.
  • Age still matters for trust. An older creation date and real post history make a channel look established to readers and advertisers who buy posts directly, which is often a bigger income source than the ad share. Read more in how to monetize a Telegram channel.

8. If you are buying or selling a channel

Ad revenue is often part of the pitch when a channel with subscribers is sold. Before you pay:

  1. Ask for screenshots of the earnings screen over several months, together with the channel statistics. A single good week says little.
  2. Check the audience is real. Compare views per post with subscribers, and look at where readers come from, since ads do not show in every region. Our fake subscriber check lists the signs.
  3. Agree what happens to the balance. The balance is withdrawn by the channel owner, so sellers normally withdraw what is available before the ownership transfer. Put it in writing.
  4. Do not price the channel on ad revenue alone. Telegram can change or stop the share at any time, so value the channel on its audience, history and topic. See what a Telegram channel is worth.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Telegram pay channel owners for ads?

50% of the revenue Telegram earns from valid impressions of sponsored messages in the channel. Telegram does not publish fixed rates, so the amount depends on the ads shown and their prices.

How many subscribers do I need for Telegram ad revenue?

Telegram's Ad Platform places sponsored messages in public channels with 1,000 or more subscribers, and the March 2024 launch post set the same line for revenue sharing.

Is Telegram ad revenue paid in TON or Stars?

Ad revenue builds up as a Gram balance, the coin called Toncoin (TON) until June 2026. Stars earned from paid posts and reactions build up as a separate Star balance.

How long until I can withdraw ad earnings?

Telegram's creator terms say Gram balance rewards can be withdrawn 2 days after they accrue, and Star balance rewards after 21 days.

How do I withdraw Telegram ad revenue?

The channel owner opens Channel Settings, Statistics, Monetization and withdraws through Fragment, connecting a crypto wallet that supports Gram. Telegram said withdrawals have no fees.

Does an older channel earn more ad revenue?

Not by age alone. Telegram's published conditions mention public status and subscriber count, not age, and earnings follow valid impressions from real readers.

Can buying subscribers increase ad revenue?

No. Fake subscribers do not create valid impressions, and Telegram can deduct balances linked to invalid or non-genuine activity.
