A linked discussion group is the group attached to a channel. Comments are the post-specific conversations inside that group. Forum topics organise a group by subject instead. The crucial restriction: Telegram does not allow Topics in a group while it is linked as a channel's discussion group.
What each feature actually does
| Feature | What it is | Conversation starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Linked discussion group | A group associated with a channel | The group chat or a channel post |
| Channel comments | A reply thread attached to an automatically forwarded post in that group | A particular channel post |
| Forum topics | Separate subject spaces within a group | A named topic, such as support or introductions |
Comments are not a second, independent comment store. Telegram forwards channel messages into the linked group; replies to that copy form the post's comment thread. Its discussion documentation explains that deleting the forwarded copy disables that post's comment section.
Topics work differently: each has its own shared media and notification settings, as described in Telegram's Topics announcement. A topic is a space inside the group, not a channel post.
When to use which setup
- Replies to announcements: choose a channel with a linked discussion group when readers should respond to individual updates.
- Recurring community conversations: choose a group with Topics when you want separate places for support, introductions or different languages.
- A small, focused conversation: consider keeping a plain group until separate subjects become difficult to follow.
How to enable comments on a channel
- Open the channel's settings and choose Discussion, the route in Telegram's comments announcement.
- Select a suitable group to link. Use an account with the required administrative access.
- Review the group's history before confirming. Telegram requires old messages to be accessible when linking a discussion group; do not use a group whose old conversations should remain hidden from newcomers.
- Publish a test post, open its comments and check the forwarded copy in the group. Test with an ordinary reader account as well.
The linking method documents the admin and visible-history requirements. If the button is missing or a thread disappears, follow the dedicated channel comments troubleshooting guide.
How to enable Topics in a group
- Have the group owner open Group Settings and enable Topics. Telegram's forum documentation reserves the forum toggle for the owner and describes forums as supergroups.
- If the group is already linked for channel discussions, decide which purpose it should serve before changing anything. Use a separate group if you need to preserve the comments setup.
- Create a small set of clearly named subjects and post instructions explaining where questions belong.
- Review Permissions for topic creation and management. Test the member experience before inviting the wider community.
Do not buy a group on the assumption that an administrator badge will let you switch its mode. Ask the owner to demonstrate the intended configuration first.
Moderate where the conversations live
For channel comments, review the linked group's administrators and bots. Keep automatic channel forwards out of blanket deletion rules, because removing the root message removes its comment section. Decide whether readers must join before commenting: Telegram supports a join-to-send setting.
For a forum, review topic management separately from message moderation. Telegram's admin rights reference distinguishes managing topics, deleting messages and banning users. Grant moderators the rights their work needs and check bot permissions too. Our admin permissions guide helps you review the roles.
What to check before buying an aged group or channel
Choose the conversation structure before choosing a creation year. When comparing old Telegram groups, ask whether the group is currently a forum or a linked discussion group, and have the seller demonstrate the settings. For old Telegram channels, inspect Discussion and identify the exact group used for comments.
- Write down what is included. Name the channel and group separately in the handover agreement; verify who controls each rather than treating a discussion link as proof of ownership.
- Inspect existing history. Read what newcomers would gain access to if you link the group.
- Test the intended use. Request a live demonstration of commenting or topic management, including the owner account needed for a mode change.
- Review the handover. Check administrators, bots and the final Discussion or Topics setting before considering the work complete.
These are configuration and control checks, not a promise of activity or growth. Use the old group verification checklist to review the evidence alongside them.
Frequently asked questions
Is a linked discussion group the same as channel comments?
The group is the chat attached to the channel. Comments are the reply threads for individual channel posts inside that group.
Can a channel's linked discussion group also have Topics?
No. Telegram's forum toggle method rejects enabling Topics in a group linked to a channel for discussions. Plan separate groups if you need both.
Do I need Topics to enable channel comments?
No. Enable discussions from Channel Settings > Discussion and link a suitable group. Topics are a different way to organise group conversations.
Who can switch a group into forum mode?
Telegram's forum documentation says the forum toggle requires owner rights. Topic management permissions are a separate setting.
Must readers join the discussion group to comment?
Admins can require joining before commenting through the join-to-send setting. Check the actual group's configuration with a reader account.
What should I ask a seller to demonstrate?
Ask to see Discussion or Topics settings, control of each chat included in the deal, administrators and bots, and a test of the commenting or topic workflow you intend to use.
