Telegram channels do not have comments of their own. When you link a discussion group, every new post is automatically copied into that group, and the comment button under the post opens that copy. If the copy is missing, so is the button.
How channel comments work
- You link a discussion group to the channel.
- Each new post is automatically forwarded into that group.
- The Comments button under the post opens the replies to that forwarded copy.
- The group can be private; subscribers can comment from the channel without joining it first, unless the group requires joining before sending messages.
Turn comments on
- Open the channel info and tap Edit.
- Open Discussion and choose an existing group or create a new one.
- Publish a new post and check that the comment button appears.
The 6 causes and their fixes
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No comment button on any post | No discussion group is linked | Link a group under Edit → Discussion |
| Button on new posts, not on older ones | Older posts were published before the group was linked | Expected: only posts published after linking get comments. Repost important old content if needed |
| Button missing on one post | Its auto-forwarded copy was deleted from the group | Check that no admin or bot deletes forwarded channel posts in the group |
| Button missing on posts sent by a bot | The bot adds its own buttons under posts | Posts with inline buttons do not show the comment button; post without buttons or change the bot settings |
| People see comments but cannot write | Group permissions, slow mode or the person is restricted | Check the group's member permissions and the person's restrictions |
| People must join first | The group requires membership to send messages | Allow non-members to comment if you want open comments |
After buying or taking over a channel
A discussion group is a separate chat with its own owner. When a channel changes hands, agree whether the linked group is included and transfer it separately; otherwise the old owner still controls the comments. Re-check the link under Edit → Discussion after the handover, and review the group's admins and bots. Use the handover checklist, and see old Telegram channels by creation year if you are looking for one.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no comment button on my Telegram channel?
Comments need a linked discussion group. Open the channel info, tap Edit, then Discussion, and link a group. Only posts published after that get a comment button.
Why don't old posts have comments?
Comments only exist for posts that were automatically forwarded to the discussion group, which happens for posts published after the group was linked.
Why did comments disappear from one post?
Its forwarded copy in the discussion group was deleted, often by a moderation bot. Without that copy the post has no comment section.
Do subscribers need to join the discussion group?
Not by default. They can comment from the channel, unless the group requires joining before sending messages.
Is the discussion group transferred with the channel?
No. It is a separate chat with its own owner and needs its own transfer.
