The rules in one minute
- Channels and public groups always show earlier messages.
- Private groups follow the Chat History for New Members setting: Visible or Hidden.
- A person who joined while history was Hidden keeps not seeing the earlier messages, even after the setting changes.
- Admins need the Ban users permission to change the setting; in a basic group, enabling it converts the group into a supergroup.
Full explanation with exceptions: why new members can't see old messages.
Buying or selling an old group
Visible history is often the proof that a group is really old. The seller should set history to Visible before the buyer joins; otherwise the buyer may never see the early messages. Follow the handover checklist and check the age with the group age checker. Looking for one? See old Telegram groups by creation year.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't new members see old messages in my Telegram group?
The group is private and Chat History for New Members is Hidden. Set it to Visible; it applies to everyone who joins after the change.
Can I make old messages visible to someone who already joined?
No. If they joined while history was hidden, earlier messages stay hidden from them, even if you change the setting, re-add them or make the group public.
Do channels have this setting?
No. Channels always show all posts to subscribers.
Why is the setting missing?
The group is public (history is always visible) or your admin role lacks the Ban users permission.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The checker runs in your browser.
