How to find a username that is free
- Keep the brand word and add a short, meaningful suffix: news, hq, official, club.
- Avoid extra digits and underscores that people mistype.
- Check each idea on t.me before announcing it.
- Set it on your account, channel or group: our Telegram username guide shows where.
A username vs an old channel
A username is only the public link; it does not change a channel's age or audience. If you want a channel that is not brand new, an old Telegram channel lets you set any free username after the transfer. Collectible short names are explained in Fragment usernames explained.

Frequently asked questions
What are the rules for a Telegram username?
5 to 32 characters, using Latin letters a–z, digits 0–9 and underscores. It must start with a letter and cannot end with an underscore. Usernames are not case-sensitive.
How do I know if a Telegram username is taken?
Open t.me/username in a browser or search it in Telegram. If a profile, channel, group or bot opens, it is taken. This checker links to t.me for every suggestion.
Why does Telegram say a username is invalid?
Usually because it is shorter than 5 characters, contains a symbol or non-Latin letter, starts with a digit, or ends with an underscore.
Can I buy a short Telegram username?
Some short and popular usernames are sold as collectibles on Fragment. See our Fragment usernames guide for how that works.
Does the username change a channel's creation date?
No. A channel keeps its creation date when the username changes; only the public link changes.
