Recover a Telegram account: what works in each case.

Telegram knows you only by your phone number. Whether you can get back in depends on what you still have: the number, a logged-in device, a passkey or your password.

Telegram's FAQ is direct about this: the phone number is the only way it identifies a user, so whoever has the number has the account. Support cannot help unless you have access to the number or to Telegram on one of your devices.

Quick answer

Still logged in on any device? Turn on two-step verification and end unknown sessions in Settings › Devices. Lost the SIM? Ask your mobile operator for a replacement SIM with the same number, then log in. A deleted account cannot be restored.

1. The one rule behind every recovery

Telegram does not keep an ID document or a second identity for your account. A username, a display name, old screenshots or a message to support cannot prove that an account is yours. What can get you in:

  • A code sent to the number by SMS, by a call or in the Telegram app on another device.
  • A passkey you created earlier, or a login email if your account has one.
  • Your two-step verification password, if you set one.

2. Find your case

3. Lost SIM card or stolen phone

These steps follow Telegram's FAQ for a lost or stolen phone. If you are still logged in on another device:

  1. Open Settings › Privacy and Security › Two-Step Verification and turn it on, so the number alone is not enough to log in.
  2. Open Settings › Devices and end the session of the lost phone.
  3. Ask your mobile operator to block the old SIM and issue a new one with your number.

If you are not logged in anywhere:

  1. Ask your mobile operator to block the old SIM and give you a replacement SIM with the same number.
  2. Log in to Telegram with the new SIM.
  3. Open Settings › Devices and end the session of the old phone.

Operators can give a number that stays unused for a long time to a new customer. Keep the SIM active while your Telegram account depends on it.

4. Forgot the two-step verification password

  • Tap Forgot password on the login screen and enter the code sent to your recovery email.
  • Still logged in on another device? Keep that session open while you sort out the password.
  • With no recovery email and no other session, Telegram offers a reset that takes about 7 days and erases the account's data. Use it only as a last resort.

Setup and safe habits are in the two-step verification guide.

5. Someone took over your account

  1. On any device where you are still logged in, open Settings › Devices and end all other sessions.
  2. Turn on two-step verification, or change the password if it is already on, and check that the recovery email is yours.
  3. Tell your contacts not to trust messages sent from your account while you were out.
  4. If you own channels or groups, check the admin list and remove admins you did not add.

If the other person set a new two-step password and you are logged out everywhere, only the recovery email or the reset above can get you back in.

6. Deleted, self-destructed or frozen

  • Deleted on Telegram's deactivation page: this cannot be undone. Messages and contacts are gone, and signing up again with the same number starts a new account.
  • Deleted for inactivity: Telegram deletes accounts that stay offline longer than the self-destruct period, 18 months by default. This cannot be undone either.
  • Frozen after reports: you can still read chats but cannot send messages. Appeal from the app and Telegram's moderators review it.

More on the self-destruct timer: inactive account deletion.

More on restrictions: frozen Telegram account.

7. Paid recovery services are scams

Nobody outside Telegram can restore an account, remove a two-step password or unfreeze an account for a fee. People who offer this in groups, ads or private messages usually want your login code or your money.

  • Never send a login code or your password to anyone, including people who say they are Telegram support.
  • Telegram sends codes in its official service chat and never asks you to forward them.
  • Type a Telegram code only in the Telegram app or on official telegram.org pages such as my.telegram.org.

8. Prevent it next time

  • Turn on two-step verification with a recovery email you control.
  • Create a passkey in Settings › Privacy and Security › Passkeys, so you can log in without an SMS.
  • Stay logged in on a second device, such as Telegram Desktop.
  • Keep the SIM active, and change your Telegram number before you give up an old one.
  • Check the self-destruct period in Settings › Privacy and Security.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover a Telegram account without the phone number?

Only if you are still logged in on another device, or you set up a passkey or a login email earlier. Otherwise you need the number back, for example with a replacement SIM from your operator.

Can I recover a Telegram account with my username?

No. A username cannot be used to log in, and Telegram support cannot restore access from it.

Can a deleted Telegram account be restored?

No. Deletion is permanent. Signing up again with the same number creates a new, empty account.

What if I forgot my two-step verification password?

Use Forgot password with your recovery email. Without email access, Telegram offers a reset after about 7 days that erases the account data, so treat it as a last resort.

Can Telegram support recover my account?

Telegram says it cannot help unless you have access to the phone number or to Telegram on one of your devices.
