Telegram shows the exact last seen time only to people your privacy settings allow. Everyone else sees an approximate status, and you see the same when someone hides theirs from you.
1. What each last seen status means
Telegram's own FAQ gives these ranges for the approximate statuses:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| online, or last seen at an exact time | The person shares their last seen with you. |
| last seen recently | Hidden from you; online between a moment ago and 2–3 days ago. |
| last seen within a week | Hidden from you; online between 2–3 and 7 days ago. |
| last seen within a month | Hidden from you; online between 6–7 days and a month ago. |
| last seen a long time ago | Online more than a month ago. You also always see this when the person has blocked you. |
So “recently” does not mean the person was just online. It can mean up to about three days.
2. How to hide your last seen
- Open Settings › Privacy and Security › Last Seen & Online.
- Choose Everybody, My Contacts or Nobody.
- Add exceptions if you need them, as described below.
The rule works both ways: if you do not share your last seen with someone, you do not see theirs either. You both see the approximate status instead.
3. Exceptions: always share or never share
Under the same setting you can add people to “Always share with” or “Never share with”. That lets you hide your last seen from everyone except a few close contacts, or show it to everyone except a few people.
4. Read time in private chats
Since January 2024 Telegram can show when your message was read in a private chat. The Hide Read Time switch sits under Last Seen & Online. If you hide your read time, you do not see other people's read time either.
5. What Telegram Premium changes
With Telegram Premium you can see other people's last seen and read time even while you hide your own, as long as they share them with you. Premium does not reveal the exact time of someone who hides it from you. Features and prices are in our Telegram Premium guide.
6. Blocked, inactive or just private?
- “A long time ago” alone does not prove you are blocked. It is also what you see for anyone who has not been online for over a month.
- Signs often linked to a block: the profile photo disappears, your messages stay at one tick and calls do not go through. None of these is proof on its own.
- An account that stays offline longer than its self-destruct period is deleted, as explained in inactive account deletion.
Last seen says nothing about how old an account is. To estimate that, use the Telegram account age checker with the numeric user ID.
